Translation

Translations are an effective way of carrying out multilingual communication and approaching people of different languages. Translation is also a very flexible form of communication: translations do not have to be exact copies of their originals but can be aimed at different groups of readers.

The nature of a translation is dictated by its communicational function. A translation can, for example, be a rough version if it is only needed for personal use; a translation can also be highly polished if it is going to be published. Furthermore, sometimes it is necessary to omit parts of the original or introduce completely new sections to the translation.

I am experienced in translating different types of texts. I have translated both general and special-field texts.

General texts, such as news articles and marketing material, are aimed at a wide range of people, which means that the language used must be clear and suited for the text type. Special-field texts, such as medical or legal texts, on the other hand, use their own concepts and terminology, and finding the right terms in the target language ensures that the contents of the original are conveyed faithfully by the translation. In short, translating both types of texts requires experience and expertise.

Authorized Translation

Authorized translation (or certified translation in some countries) concentrates on translating official documents, such as certificates, agreements, and decisions. Such documents are needed by public authorities, which use translated documents as instruments in decision-making. For instance, if a person is seeking to study at a foreign university, the school in question may request an authorized translation of that person's prior diploma.

In its core, authorized translation is one of the most challenging forms of translation. A translator has to understand the peculiarities of legal language as well as the differences between the world's legal systems, such as civil and common law. Furthermore, a translator has to have mastered the methods and principles that govern the translation of official documents. In fact, authorized translations are expected to be faithful and errorless copies of their originals.

In Finland, each language pair and direction has to be authorized separately. I have been granted the right to make authorized translations from English into Finnish by the Examination Board of Authorised Translators. You can confirm my authorization on the online register.

Localization

In its widest sense, localization is about making any product suitable for a specified group of people. In practice, however, the term is often used to mean the act of translating computer software from one language into another.

Localization is a special field of translation where a digital application, such as a website or a video game, is made available to a group of users speaking another language. Therefore, it is important to not only be aware of the linguistic and cultural differences but also take into account all kinds of technical limitations. A successfully localized piece of software is one that is easy and pleasant to use.

Languages and Pricing

I mainly translate into English and my first language, which is Finnish. If you need an authorized translation, I have the right to make such translations from English into Finnish. Please see below for all language pairs and directions that are currently available.

Each text is unique. Therefore, the price of a translation is determined by multiple factors. Here are some of them:

• What are the source and target languages?
• How difficult is it going to be to translate the original text?
• When is the final delivery date for the finished translation?
• Is the translation going to be published, or is it just needed for personal use?

You should always invest in those translations that are going to be published, since a poor translation can hurt the writer, business, brand, etc.

Translations are priced based on the number of words, lines, or pages. One standard line is 60 characters and one standard page 1,560 characters including spaces. The minimum rate per word is €0.15, and the minimum charge for a translation is €40. If the delivery schedule is tight, an additional charge of 50–100% will be added to the base price. If applicable, a VAT of 25.5% will be added to all prices.

Translations of thesis abstracts (max. 400 words) have a fixed price of €70 (VAT 25.5% is included). For these, the additional short-notice charge is 25%.
